Journaling June - Day 7
Journaling June
Day 7 I'd sold an item on ebay, some capacitors I often buy in bulk when I need them for a project so I can sell on the excess and make a bit of money (which also means I'm going to put on hold recapping the recently acquired Abit motherboard until some more capacitors arrive). I came to realise that some text in the listing's image had been wrong all this time, and since ebay changed over to the "Simple Delivery" scheme where they take yet more freedom away from sellers, my claim of "1st Class postage" was now wrong, so I had to go and rectify that across all of those listings and get things continuitified. A weird thing was, because most of these listings were made before the scheme was rolled out I got a warning at the top of each Edit page saying that once updated that listing would be enrolled in that scheme, as if it wasn't an option any more, yet when I scrolled down to the Delivery section I could still choose the traditional options... With my breakfast, I watched Clint's latest LGR video about an old Comaq laptop and I can relate to the issues of degrading plastics and those CMOS batteries as I have a couple of old laptops that have encountered such issues. Failing capacitors are a common issue too and old laptops can be a pain to dismantle (even if the plastics are still holding up) to get at them. I'm starting to accept that old tech like this is just going to fall apart and die over time as much as we might want to collect such things. In fact, I found a weird shard of rubber on my recently mentioned Dell laptop's keyboard and then realised the next day that it had come from one of the rubber bumpers that are either side of the screen to cushion it when closing; they're basically disintegrating. Speaking of my old tech, I started to consider yesterday building a shelving unit to stack a bunch of my PC towers on; I have some wood that I'm supposed to be building some walls with for insulation but I can't bring myself to progress with that project, and my brain is now visioning those shelves instead... Whilst the weather was holding up I cycled round to my mum's house as she had some recent acquisitions to show me. Our aunt (my great aunt) is now in a care home and her house was recently sold. My mum got to visit it before hand and returned with some stuff. Some things I'll be trying to sell on ebay, but I took these for myself:
The spanner is a bit gnarled up and slightly seized but I was thinking it might be able to get at the couple of valve adjuster nuts on my car that are hard to get a regular spanner on without moving the carburettor out of the way, although it is a bit hefty. I'll probably not bother finding that out until next year when I next check the valve clearances since I think they're spot on right now. The weird thing was, and I only realised after the visit, that I seemed to have been talking about my aunt in the past tense already, although following a stroke and the subsequent decline, we're all strangers somewhat now and she's too far away for regular visits. My mum also had some wood for me look at. There's a decent plank that I could make a shelf or two out of but I will need to go back over there with a saw and cut it down to the lengths required and then get her to bring them in her van or something. It'll be a bit of a rigmarole but she'll be otherwise giving that plank away and it's worth a bit... For the rest of the day I didn't get much else done tbh, except I did spend some time measuring and sketching out the wall where I think I will build shelve to hold some computers... it's funny when my brain just can't let an idea go! But tomorrow is Monday, so a fresh new start for my efforts... |
