Here's a forest walk:

Einstein Hurdles #2

Just as I was sitting down for round two of "Install ProtonVPN on Linux Mint xfce" (see yesterday's day), having gotten a list of terminal commands from ChatGPT, the damned internet was working properly again and no longer blocking my einstein@home uploads and downloads.

While that's good news, I still wanted to see if the instructions would work, and they did.

To install ProtonVPN in Linux Mint xfce:
In terminal:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install -y wget apt-transport-https gnupg dialog
wget -q -O - https://repo.protonvpn.com/debian/public_key.asc | sudo apt-key add -
You should see: OK
echo "deb https://repo.protonvpn.com/debian stable main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/protonvpn.list
sudo apt update
sudo apt install -y proton-vpn-gnome-desktop
Open ProtonVPN from the 'Start' menu.

(Not quite as straightforward as double-clicking an .exe in Windows... welcome to Linux.)

With those successes out of the way I thought I might tackle that misbehaving graphics card.

A Gigabyte Geforce GTX 780 GHz Edition.

Could its instabilities be due to the factory overclock (I've encountered this before)? Even logging into windows seemed buggy and trying to run einstein@home on it promptly resulted in the driver crashing. It's a hefty card requiring a suitable PSU with 2 x 8-pin power connecters, but I'd pretty much ruled out a PSU issue since I have two machines that are technically capable.

Having prior experience with MSI Afterburner (I used to dabble in overclocking), I fired that up (in Windows) and with the help of ChatGPT trialled a few things. It turned out that by underclocking the base clock by ~30MHz did the trick (the card appears to have a ~25% overclock from the factory). I'll have to keep an eye on it though because different work from the project can change the demands.

While Afterburner is for Windows there are methods for within Linux too, so I have the future option of using the card in there instead.

I began this stint (I participate from the end of October through to the end of March) in 50th in the UK, I'm hoping I might get to 40th, ideally without having to shell out on any additional hardware.
