Day 2,

I mentioned my shed roof in on Day 1. Well in this one I provide a "Bird Box Update" (the bird box is/was attached to the shed). I say is/was because, well, read on and you'll find out.

When the latest family of birds occupied the box this year they managed to form for themselves an alternative entrance/exit.

The box was clearly becoming rotten and after the young ones fledged the box some wasps moved in and appeared to pack it out with their hive. There was lots of activity with comings and goings until things went quiet. I was concerned that the hive was then dormant with the wasps in hibernation (I'm not all that clued-up on the life cycles of such things), and that they would reappear after the winter months, and me (and my neighbour) would be plagued once more (they didn't really bother me but they did my neighbour, which was somewhat amusing because I kept quiet about where they were coming from!)

I devised a mental plan whereby I would wait for a wet and windy day and go out with a mallet attached to the end of a long piece of wood and knock the rotten abode free from the shed, and then scarper inside before the swarm got to me - you know, how such things happen in cartoons like Winnie the Pooh.

Anyway, in the end I did knock the box down but by this point it appeared the box was actually vacant. I first constructed a new one though, following its dimensions (I had been given that one and had never made my own).

Some crude measurements in inches.

I found that I could extricate the necessarily-sized pieces from a pallet I had lying around:

e'voila:

This turned out to be quite a satisfying little project.
